solidARity is a WIP AR-mediated participatory programs, using Augmented Reality filters as vessels to explore identity, community, and solidarity. Drawing on ancestral bodily marking rituals, this project attempts to reclaim our body as a vehicle for activism.

The goal of this project is to utilize AR filters as communication devices to connect people who you wouldn't meet otherwise: friends you haven’t seen for a while, remote allies, and strangers who don’t share values with you. Once connected, an opportunity for discussion emerges and with it greater opportunities for mutual support. This project also examines the implications of exposing our faces and bodies in the context of social media systems perpetuating surveillance capitalism. Facebook and Snapchat may have ‘claimed’ our faces, but they are not inventors of facial augmentation. By looking at the vibrant history of facial and bodily marking traditions around the world, the project attempts to reclaim our faces and bodies as a space for discussions on identity and solidarity.
